Overall the app is very detailed and covers a wide variety of OMM topics and related information. It serves as a very good app for quick review.

It would be helpful to use less abbreviations as at times the app appears more to be a student’s individual study notes more than a review for other students, residents or practicing physicians. Also, there should be some improved editing to check for spelling and grammar mistakes. Lastly, it would be better terminology to change what the authors review as counterstrain under the assessment section to tenderpoints. Counterstrain is a technique, not a diagnostic finding.

While this app also misses body areas, sympathetic viscerosomatic dysfunctions, and helpful ways for integrating OMM into clinical assessment and treatment for a patient, it still is an overall
effective site a decent reference for most students or osteopathic physicians.

There was time when there were very few medical applications were available for iPhone, but it has changed tremendously. We now have so many apps that now we have difficult time choosing which one we should have on our iPhone or iPod touch. The following Five apps are very important for all medical professionals who are seeing patients. These apps serve the most common information needs of a clinician.

Epocrates. This application has evolved a lot since it started. It not only provides most up-to-date drug information but it also provides information on diagnostic test, symptoms, diseases and antibiotic guide. The Fee Rx app is good but the Epocrates Essentials offers a lot more.
ICD Meister. It is an app for practicing physician and healthcare professionals who needs to look up ICD-9 codes during billing process. Now you have this search capability as well as option to look up frequently searched codes right in this small app. This app will not only allow you to search the ICD-9 codes but allows you to bookmark the frequently searched codes in your favorite for quick reference later.
Medscape from WebMD. This app is new in the block but it free and offers Medical News, CME credits, Drug information, Drug Interaction informations, Physician / Pharmacy / Hospital directory with options to make call directly from the app. The Medical news is customizable to your specialty and interests.

Netters Musculoskeletal Anatomy Study Aid for your iPhone or iPod touch

Anyone who has attended a medical school, have read Netter’s Anatomy textbook. Now we have the same pictures available on iPhone in an interactive format. This study aid developed by Modality Inc. had about 210 cards. The pictures are very sharp and clear. You also have an option to zoom in and out. It allows you to “flip” the image over to review concise text on areas of origin, insertion, action, innervation, anatomical relevance, and clinical significance.

You can browse the pictures by selecting the Body section. It then given you option to select Bony anatomy, Radiographic anatomy, Ligaments, Muscles, Arteries, Nerves, Physical axamination and Conditions. Once a card is opened, you have an option to simply click on each “Pin” and see the answer OR select the Quiz mode and test yourself. It will then ask to identify certain part and if you get it write, you will get green signal and if you get it wrong, you will get red signal with option to try again.

Another great feature on each card is that when you select a pin, it will first display the name associated with pinned item. After that when you click on the displayed name, it will tell you that on which other cards this particular structure appears in and also an option to search Google for this particular structure.

You also have an option to bookmark certain cards for furture quick reference under bookmarks.

This app should be not be considered as alternative to Netter’s Textbook because it is not as detailed but it is an excellent study tool. It is still very comprehensive and will definitely replace any Anatomy Flash Cards.

Long gone are the days when you physically have to walk to the workstation to view patient medical images. With the advancement of world wide web technologies (Web 2.0), physicians can watch the images now on their iPhone.

Heart Imaging Technologies is offering a non-proprietary PACS (picture archiving communication and storage) systems, as opposed to others that are tied to specific hardware. Medical images displayed in a web browser have traditionally been of lower quality and therefore had limited diagnostic utility. This technology is the first to provide physicians with the ability to drill-down and view medical images, including movies, on a hand-held device. Physicians can simply click on a web link sent via email by one of their colleagues, enter their password, and, for example, instantly view movies of a patient’s beating heart halfway around the world. They can even put their colleagues on speakerphone and carry on a medical consultation while simultaneously browsing through the imaging results.
